Scaled Down

Having enjoyed this large family home in the heart of Fendalton, its owners of 30 years were forced to leave the property after it was severely damaged by the second major earthquake to hit Christchurch in February 2011. Despite the wooden upper storey remaining unscathed, the unreinforced double brick of the ground floor was left broken beyond repair.

Finely crafted brickwork in the lower storey which featured a castle-like structure with battlements alongside the main entrance and a well formed archway added a sense of occasion to arrival at the front door and these were complemented outside by the curved brick wall by the pool.

Despite the fact that house this had a host of interesting architectural features and held many happy memories for the family, it has been demolished and a new building with the same footprint but more of a more secure construction now stands on the site. Inside there is a reminder of the original home: a scaled down model on a table made of timber from the old house.
