Scaled Down

Before the earthquakes of 2011, this large family home, a two storey version of the Bay Villa with its distinctive moulding above the windows stood for more than a century near the city centre and close to the River Avon, a part of Christchurch which was to suffer badly. The prominent brick chimneys with their typically Victorian clay chimney-pots on top fell through the house leaving a path of destruction which was ultimately too great to repair.

This spacious house, for many years the home of a prominent New Zealand artist and his family is now gone.  The collection of paintings and family treasures inside were rescued safely and the owners remained living for some time in a converted studio area.  More recently, they have rebuilt their lives and a new studio block now stands on the land.
