Scaled Down

This imposing and finely proportioned house at 77 Deans Avenue overlooking Hagley Park, is striking for its Tudor-style wooden battens, its matching sets of dormer windows facing the front and rear of the house and its imaginative colour scheme. Built in the 1920s, it has a plain stucco exterior which forms a simple backdrop for the many hundreds of tiny window panes that give this dwelling its old-world charm. An inviting, well-lit entrance porch with a brass step leads to a substantial house which undoubtedly has many stories to tell.

Well built and of robust construction, the house suffered only minor damage during the earthquakes and although work was required to strengthen the stairwell and some of the interior rooms, 77 Deans Avenue was left for the most part, unscathed.
