Scaled Down

Designed to reflect something of the heritage of early Christchurch, this block of nine apartments echoes the 18th and 19th century brick terraces of English towns and cities. Each of these houses has its own car park entered from the street front through a wide central opening which creates an attractive ‘mews-like’ character to the block.

Of interest too, are the bricked up windows, referencing the Window Tax of 1696 which imposed a tax on the owners of buildings with more than the allowable seven or eight windows. These days, bricked windows are employed by architects for aesthetic reasons.
