Scaled Down

The Christchurch Deaf Association building (now demolished)

Having once been the place where the deaf community of Christchurch met for social occasions and other activities provided for them, this building was so badly damaged in the 2011 earthquakes that it suffered the fate of many similar central city buildings and has now been demolished.
The large concrete and brick structure dating back to 1964 had a pleasingly functional aesthetic; simple in form, well lit and although somewhat hidden away, it was a very worthy building of its era.

It was also of course, a special place for those who met there and its loss is keenly felt.
