Scaled Down

The Wellington cityscape is known for its charming two storey villas of the late nineteenth century, packed tightly onto steep hill sections. This beautiful example in the suburb of Thorndon possesses all the characteristics we associate with the style: sash windows, ornate railings, verandas with hand-cut wooden brackets and curvilinear mouldings under the bay windows.

Situated on its wedge shaped section at the end of a crescent, this house, like many in New Zealand, has undergone a number of additions over the years to adapt to changing needs and to make best use of the site.

'The villa survives - and succeeds - as the archetypal house form of those nineteenth century parts of our towns which have survived into the present'
